What is it? What does it do?
The most important decision made in making a record (album/ CD/ vinyl/ whatever you want to make) or live event is not the budget, or recording process, or players, or the promo art or the name, or even the songs themselves. It is deciding what you want the finished record or event to do. What role do you want this project to play in your larger scheme?
Is it part of a business plan? Are you planning on selling it? Is it primarily a promotional tool for your business?
Do you want it to co-exist and compete with other music artists in the local music scene? National scene? Global Scene?
Do you want to use it as a promotional tool? Do you want to use it share your talent or stories?
Do you want to make a record just for the sake of making a really great record? Do you want to make something amazing? (Art for the sake of expression is just as valid and valuable as an album for sale)
Defining your goals for a project helps us make decisions about budget, project length, personnel and style. Having a defined goal for a record definitely helps when you need to give that guitar take just one more shot (after the other 35 takes didn’t quite make it!).
Finally, having defined goals make it a lot easier to know when the project is finished, complete and you can let it go. (Thats why we call it releasing a record) Let's talk about defining your goals, even if thats all I end up helping you with. You'll be surprised where the conversation can go!
